Terry and Maria’s Story Terry has had diabetes for over 20 years. As a result of the disease, he developed difficulty with circulation and lower extremity sensation. He eventually had to have his right leg amputated and not too long after that, suffered a spinal cord stroke. The family lives in a two-story home and Terry was not able to get up and down the stairs. As a result, the family decided it was best to convert the main-level into an area where Terry could reside.  The Solution By capturing some space from the kitchen, the existing half bath was redesigned to create a full bath. A wheelchair accessible shower was installed and included a wall mounted shower seat and grab bars. Increased lighting was added to help with Terry’s visual issues. The existing toilet was replaced with a Toto toilet, which includes a bidet feature, making it easier to complete toileting activities independently. The dining room was converted into a master bedroom and hardwood floors were installed throughout. Once Terry returned home from rehab, he was able to manage… Read More

Linda and Ben's Story Linda has osteoarthritis which has resulted in decreased stability with her mobility. Linda and Ben live in a multi-level home with several sets of stairs that have low lighting and handrails on one side. Unfortunately, Linda has experienced several falls that have led to knee problems, a right shoulder injury causing a limited range of motion, and decreased grip in both hands. One of the areas of concern was the bathroom, due to a combination tub/shower with a sliding glass enclosure and a low toilet, which made it difficult to go from a sitting to standing position. Knowing that OA can be a progressive disease, Linda and Ben needed a solution to ensure a safe environment for the long term. The Solution LifeWise assisted Linda and Ben in choosing renovations that provided increased home accessibility for the changes she was experiencing. Due to the frequency in which Linda was falling, the bathtub was replaced with a barrier-free shower. A fold down seat was also installed, so Linda could sit down while… Read More

Tim and Lisa’s Story Tim has early onset Parkinson's disease with progressive mobility issues. The home, while on one level, had an inaccessible shower and toilet area. The thick pile carpet throughout had become a trip hazard with Tim's gait issues. Lisa, his wife, was concerned about the inaccessible laundry area, insufficient access to the closet, poor storage and safety with bathing. The Solution In meeting with Tim and Lisa, it was determined that the current space did not meet their needs. The existing office space was now underutilized in their retirement. Capturing that space allowed us to create a large walk-in shower, accessible toilet area and more storage. The existing master bath was reconfigured to become an accessible laundry area. A steam shower and heated floors were added to help with joint discomfort the couple was experiencing. The toilet was replaced with a Toto hands-free toilet that has a bidet feature to assist in toileting tasks. These changes have helped Tim maintain his independence and made the… Read More

Robin and Kevin's Story Robin was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and as her condition progressed, it became increasingly difficult for the family and caregivers to get her in the shower. Over 3 months passed without being able to successfully bathe her and it was becoming clear that Robin’s wish of wanting to remain in the home was becoming less realistic with time. The initial home assessment revealed a small shower enclosure that was the source of much angst with the showering process as behavioral outbursts were common for her during this time.  It also revealed a toilet in close proximity to the shower. The Solution The existing bathroom was redesigned to create a shower room free of the barriers that were inhibiting her tasks before. The shower room also was also outfitted with a toilet that enabled the caregivers to transfer… Read More

Virginia’s Story Virginia has severe dementia and was living in a nursing facility. Her son was determined to bring her home. Virginia requires assistance with all self-care tasks including bathing and toileting. She can walk short distances with assistance and uses a transport chair inside her apartment for longer distances. She is unable to go up and down stairs. Virginia lives in a single level apartment with her son and a family caregiver. The tub/shower in the bathroom was on a platform constructed two steps above the floor level. There was a large post in the middle of the room limiting access. Unable to access the bathtub, the family set a shower chair in the middle of the room where she was given sponge baths. The Solution In order for Virginia to bathe, a low-barrier shower with a handheld was installed and the post was removed. A rolling shower chair was also purchased. The chair allowed the family to transport her directly from the bedroom to the bathroom while eliminating the need for an additional transfer. Virginia no longer requires 2 people to bathe her and she loves being able to get in the shower. The family’s overall feeling of safety and ability to function jumped 4 points from a 1 to a 5. About LifeWise Renovations A low-barrier shower with a handheld shower was installed and the post was removed. A rolling shower chair was also… Read More
